Remote Learning information

Broadwater Church of England Primary School Remote Learning Strategy

The Coronavirus Act 2020 Provision of Remote Education (England) provides legal certainty for all involved in the education sector, including parents, teachers and schools themselves. It makes clear that schools have a legal duty to provide remote education for state-funded, school-age children unable to attend school due to coronavirus (COVID-19). For further information see: Document published 22nd October. Click here to read it.

Remote Education at Broadwater Church of England Primary School

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has found that the effectiveness of remote teaching is determined by many of the same factors as determine the effectiveness of live classroom teaching. For example:

  • ensuring pupils receive clear explanations
  • supporting growth in confidence with new material through scaffolded practice
  • application of new knowledge or skills
  • enabling pupils to receive feedback on how to progress

These form the principles upon which we set our remote learning provision. We have set out how we will achieve this for individuals isolating from school (1) and, when required, for wider class, year group (2) or whole school lock down (3).

Ensuring access to remote provision

An email was sent to all parents asking them to indicate if they did not have Internet access and or technology for home learning such as: tablet/laptop or PC.

We will:

  • Provide short term loans of IT hard ware – if Wi-Fi available at home.
  • Offer to provide paper copies of all learning that can be collected once a week from school. In very isolated cases, these may be delivered.

Families and children:

  • We expect all families to support the continued provision of learning and ensure that children complete what has been set as it is in the child’s best interest that learning provision is not interrupted.
  • We expect all remote learning to be completed to the best of the child’s ability.
  • We expect all remote learning to be sent electronically via Google classroom/email/ILD during this time.
  • We understand that remote learning can be difficult and would like to be supportive. Therefore, where support / help is required, we expect parents / carers to contact us quickly so that we can offer timely advice and support.
  • We expect children to continue to read at home every day.

Remote Learning Information

We are aware that some children may need to stay at home, at some point over the next few months, due to having to self-isolate. The following arrangements are in place to support families with their child’s learning at home, whilst the current situation continues. Provision: 4 hours of learning for KS2 and 3 hours for KS1 and EY.

1. Waiting for a test and result (individuals)

For situations where individuals across the school are isolating (whilst waiting for the outcome of a test for themselves or a family member). Those children who are well enough should complete home learning in line with what they would be learning in school.

The school will:

  • Have regular contact between the teacher and family.
  • Provide daily work and a timetable of the week. (Via resources pack/email/Google classroom).
  • The main focus of these activities will be phonics (KS1), reading, writing and mathematics.
  • See below for useful websites to support additional learning across the curriculum.
2. Should we have to close a class bubble or year group

The teachers will:

  • Provide a weekly timetable with learning objectives for all subjects set out clearly so that parents can see what is expected over the course of the week.
  • Provide learning each week (Via resources pack/email/Google classroom) along with explanations and teaching points to explain each activity.
  • Be in regular contact with the children in their class to check progress and offer support (class email and Google Classroom). For those families that have informed the school that they do not have internet access contact will be via telephone and work can be dropped in to the office for feedback to be given.
  • See below for useful websites to support additional learning across the curriculum.
  • SEND support – The Inclusion Manager or Pastoral Lead will telephone, at least once a week, all identified SEND/vulnerable families who are isolating.
  • Teachers will continue to provide learning for children that are working remotely.
  • Teachers will expect work to be sent back from children daily, according to what is set on the week’s timetable. Teachers will respond with next steps and useful feedback for learning for Mathematics and English.
  • Teaching Assistants will telephone pupils (families) identified by class teacher to offer additional support.
  • Physical Education activities will also be provided.
 3. Should the school be part of a localised/National lockdown:
  • Learning will be set daily/weekly, using Google classrooms, School Website (Early Years ILD)
  • Teachers will maintain regular contact during the school week to offer support, advice and feedback.

Should paper copies of learning be required, please let the school office or class teacher know and we can organise this.

Online Safety

These are our methods of communication:

  • The web-site
  • Parent email address
  • Google Classroom- children have a log on
  • Year group email- to be activated during step 2 or 3.
  • Early Years - ILD

All online clips sent out for children to use to support their learning will have been vetted by the teachers and will be age appropriate.

Teachers will only contact via email during normal school hours. They will not send emails out at the weekend or respond to emails from parents over the weekend or after 5pm unless in an emergency situation.

Monitoring the Effectiveness of Remote Learning and Communication

We hope that parents will feel able to support remote learning as we plan for it to be set in a clear and understandable way for all to access. However, communication on how effective our remote learning provision will be key. Good communication will enable us to react, reflect and refine where necessary. We will send information and guidance via email and post it on the website.

We would also ask that parents communicate quickly about issues arising with their class teachers through the class email system (when enabled); the office email; Google classrooms or the Office email.

Keeping Pupils Motivated and Engaged

We will monitor pupil engagement with remote learning provision. Where a child is not engaged, the class teacher will email to find out if there are any issues with regards to this. It is expected that all pupils complete work set by the teacher in the time given. Feedback to parents will be offered where it is felt that a child’s engagement levels are lower that what would normally be expected.

In order for this to work effectively we need to work together. Please contact the school if you need any support or advice. We want our children to continue to make progress and be happy in their learning.
